CPM’s: Undereducated & Inferior Midwives

Here is a quote I came across today:

From a certain “Dr. Amy” :

Kelly:

“So what’s your take on CPM’s?”

Amy:

“Grossly undereducated, undertrained and lacking experience. A inferior class of midwife that would not be considered competent by the standards of any other incustrialized country.”

Interesting. Alarming. Frustrating. Maddening. Many OB’s couldn’t even pass the NARM exam! Undereducated? “An inferior calss of midwife”??? I posted several comments to this blog. Intelligent, thoughtful, respectful posts asking questions about her assertions concerning homebirth safety. Those comments were (imagine that!) deleted soon after I posted them. When I got angry and posted a comment about them being deleted, guess what!!? THAT post stayed up there, making me look like a lunatic.

It would be funny if it weren’t so incredibly insulting. She obviously has an ax to grind when it comes to homebirth and where she gets her numbers for infant mortality is beyond me.  She likes CNM’s for hospital birth (and why not?) but not for homebirth under any circumstances. You just read (above) what she thinks about CPM’s.

I saw a t-shirt today that said, “You have the right to remain silent. Everything you say will be misquoted and used against you.” This incident made me want to go back and buy it.

  1. It is best to not even visit this women’s blog. The more hits her blog gets the higher it shows up in web searches for home births. So just ignore her. What she says is just not even worth reading.

Hugs though, I can understand your frustration!

  2. I would second enjoybirth’s comment — just don’t even go there, don’t give her the satisfaction of a link to her hateful blog. She’s built up more negative karma than anyone I’ve ever known, and you don’t want to drink from that well (been there, done that!). If she had anything valid to say, more docs would be on her bandwagon, but they won’t touch her with a 10-ft pole. Your life will be better without Amy and her hateful rage in it!

  3. I’ve had a time with her too. But I actually beat her! She started in about how the Johnson & Daviss home-birth study (which showed a comparable risk of infant mortality to hospital birth, and a much-lower risk of interventions and complications) was a lie and misleading, etc., etc. And I walked through all the stats and everything, and showed how she was distorting the facts, yet calling the researchers liars. She actually let that post stand–surprised me, too, because I’d heard she would delete posts that she couldn’t answer. But, yeah, she’s venomous! She takes things you say out of context, sneers at you, won’t back up her statements but requests you back up yours…..It’s so tempting to go back, but it just takes so much time and energy, and I’d rather just promote natural birth than defend it.
